Green Mountain National Golf Course is a Gene Bates design built into the forested slopes near Killington and widely considered Vermont's best public course. The par-71 layout climbs and drops through hardwood and evergreen woodland, with holes cut individually into the mountainside, exposed ledge, and rock-lined brooks. Elevated tees give substantial downhill carry while several approach shots play uphill to shelved greens surrounded by steep runoffs, so choosing the correct club is the central challenge. There is no adjacent development, keeping the setting quiet and scenic, and the fall foliage season is especially popular. It is fully public with a practice area and grill, open May through October.
