Hawktree Golf Club is a Jim Engh design north of Bismarck, famous for bunkers filled with crushed black slag from a nearby coal mine rather than sand. The par-72 layout works through the rolling native prairie of the Burnt Creek valley, mixing dramatic elevation drops, blind shot options, and broad landing areas framed by tall fescue. Engh's signature muscle bunkers and boomerang greens create wide swings in scoring depending on wind direction, which on the open North Dakota plains can change a hole by three clubs. It is fully public with walking allowed, a practice range, and a clubhouse serving daily play. Peak season runs May through early October.
